What comes to your mind when you hear the name ‘John Carpenter?’ Probably a number of his movies. The director has brought us hit after hit over his directing career, from They Live, to Big Trouble in Little China, to Christine, to The Thing, and his most famous creation Halloween. But there’s more to the man than his films. On his official Twitter, he’s inviting fans into his world in the form of a teaser for an upcoming documentary, John Carpenter Live: Behind the Scenes!
One of the things that sets Carpenter apart from other horror directing icons is his sound. Not only is he a storyteller, he’s also a composer. Carpenter has scored most of his own films himself, including the famous theme for Halloween. Alongside his filmmaking career, Carpenter also does tours to give fans the chance to hear their favorite spine-chilling synth tunes live.
In the tweet, Carpenter gives a bullet point list of what to expect of the upcoming documentary. Fans are expected to get up close and personal with Carpenter’s life on the road during his 2016 world tour, engage with some interviews with the band and crew, see some footage of live rehearsals, and much more! His wife, Sandy King Carpenter, is also announced as the director! This will not be the first time she has collaborated with the musician and director, as she has also produced many of his later films such as In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Vampires, and Ghosts of Mars.
As well as his music, John Carpenter’s influence continues to this day. Starting in 1978, the Halloween franchise is going strong as ever. After almost a decade of sleep from the two Rob Zombie remake films, Michael Meyers was officially revived by the David Gordon Green trilogy. These films, 2019’s Halloween and 2021’s Halloween Kills, star Jamie Lee Curtis reviving her role as a now much older Laurie Strode who is out to finally put an end to the Shape that haunts her. Carpenter is credited with composing the score for the two films, along with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The trilogy is set to end on the upcoming Halloween Ends, which is currently scheduled for an October 14, 2022 release.
Fans are sure to get a lot of cool stuff from this documentary. While Carpenter’s most beloved for his movies, his impact on music is surely something to be admired. He was one of the first composers to pick up synthesizers, which he used in his feature debut Dark Star. In an interview with PMT, Carpenter stated that the new technology was a way to sound big with just a keyboard. It’s undoubtable that his music has had a ton of influence on artists of all kinds throughout the years. With the increasing popularity of the Synthwave genre, more and more interest is growing in Carpenter’s other creative works. This film is sure to be a sight to see for those newcomers as well as returning fans. John Carpenter Live: Behind the Scenes is coming later this year, 2022.
