Christopher Smith’s newest horror film depicts an eerie convent as Jena Malone’s character uncovers the truth behind her brother’s suicide.
Acclaimed horror director Christopher Smith’s newest film, Consecration, just dropped a chilling trailer today, with actress Jena Malone‘s character investigating a convent where her brother allegedly committed suicide. Taking place in an isolated convent in Scotland, the atmosphere becomes immediately eerie while the nuns continue their daily rites. It’s hinted that Grace’s character is “a woman of science” and doesn’t share the same lifestyle or beliefs as the nuns there, although the trailer reveals her taking part in some sort of ritual with the clergywomen.
Consecration joins other horror films, such as The Witch, Saint Maud, and The Nun, in which religion plays a large role. Religion in horror is often either depicted as a shield against evil or a driving factor in violent cult-like behavior. The cryptic trailer shows it could be either – or maybe even both. The exact danger in Consecration is shrouded under mystery. There are hints of demons, but it also appears that the nuns at Mount Savoir Convent are hiding a dark secret, which may be the source of danger themselves. The brand-new trailer from IFC Films can be found below.
Grace states that “my brother was badly hurt before he fell. I think he discovered something that he was afraid of.” Perhaps he might have been driven to jump from the dilapidated church atop a tall cliff – if he wasn’t outright murdered himself. One of the nuns describes his suicide as “falling into darkness,” further fueling Grace’s grief and her possible distrust of religion.
Consecration Explores Religion, Superstition, Purity, and Self-Harm
While Consecration offers the chills and thrills you’d always expect from a horror film, it also aims to tackle some heavy themes such as self-harm as Grace watches a nun apparently cut herself as she says, “I think I might be a really bad person.” Check out the official poster for Consecration below.
While many trailers nowadays outright state the plot twist of a film, the Consecration trailer hints at many things but reveals little. The official synopsis reads:
“In CONSECRATION, after the suspicious death of her brother, a priest, Grace (Jena Malone) goes to the Mount Saviour Convent in Scotland to find out what really happened. Once there, she uncovers murder, sacrilege and a disturbing truth about her own past.”
Director Christopher Smith’s other horror films include Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, and more recently, The Banishing. In addition, actress Jena Malone has appeared in Sucker Punch, Adopting Audrey, The Neon Demon, and The Hunger Games film series, among others.
Consecration releases exclusively in theaters on Feb. 10 and will be available on VOD on Mar. 3. It stars Jena Malone, Danny Huston, and Ian Pirie. Distributed by IFC Films and Shudder, the film is directed by Christopher Smith, who co-wrote the script with Laurie Cook.
