Janet Jackson Documentary Trailer and Premier Date Revealed

A&E and Lifetime have recently revealed the extended trailer as well as the premiere date for their upcoming two-part documentary on the pop icon Janet Jackson, made in cooperation with the singer herself. The documentary, known as JANET, will provide viewers a more intimate look at the singer’s life, career, and more.

The three-minute clip shared by Lifetime as the trailer also reveals the various other personalities who have been interviewed in the documentary, including the likes of Missy Elliott, Janelle Monae (who inducted Jackson into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Mariah Carey, Teyana Taylor, Tyler Perry, and many more. Samuel L. Jackson is also heard referring to Janet Jackson as ‘the greatest show woman’ in the trailer. Apparently, it is no exaggeration that the documentary offers a never-seen-before peek into Janet’s life. As rapper Jonathan William Davis, better known by his stage name Q-Tip, says, “For her (Janet) to want to open up, I’m flabbergasted.”

The trailer has also been shared on the Lifetime official Twitter handle, with the fitting caption, “It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for.”

The JANET trailer prepares viewers for what to expect from the upcoming documentary, which talks about rather difficult topics of her life and explores her childhood, the early years of her career, motherhood, her romantic history, how the allegations against her brother Michael Jackson, affected her career, and the infamous Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show performance. Her accidental wardrobe malfunction involving Justin Timberlake during the halftime performance at Super Bowl XXXVIII was something that had blown up all over the internet in 2004. Jackson later commented,

It’s truly embarrassing for me to know that 90 million [140 million] people saw my breast, and then to see it blown up on the internet the size of a computer screen […] But there are much worse things in the world, and for this to be such a focus, I don’t understand.

JANET further focuses on exploring her father’s influence on her career as well as the pressure that comes with sharing one of the most iconic last names in the music industry. The four-hour documentary had been “five years in the making” and the icon herself presided as the Executive Producer of the project, along with her brother Randy Jackson. The documentary has been directed by Ben Hirsch.

JANET releases as a two-part documentary, with the first part premiering on A&E and Lifetime on January 28th, the 40th anniversary of Jackson’s 1982 self-titled debut LP.
