The horror movie It’s a Wonderful Knife is heading to theaters Nov. 10 just in time for the early kick-off of the holiday season. Touted as It’s a Wonderful Life by way of Scream, the film is a holiday-themed slasher like the all-time classic Black Christmas, and will star Jane Widdop (Yellowjackets), Joel McHale (Community), Justin Long (Barbarian), and Cassandra Naud (Influencer).
Widdop will be playing the protagonist, Winnie Carruthers. McHale is co-starring as her father, David, with Long playing Mr. Waters, the town patron. Tyler MacIntyre (who previously helmed the morbidly brilliant Tragedy Girls) is directing using a screenplay by Michael Kennedy (of the hit horror comedy Freaky). It is produced by Divide/Conquer alongside Seth Caplan in association with Fourth Culture Films. Kennedy is executive producing with Independent Entertainment. The official synopsis for It’s a Wonderful Knife reads as follows:
A year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, Winnie Carruthers’ life is less than wonderful — but when she wishes she’d never been born, she finds herself in a nightmare parallel universe and discovers that without her, things could be much, much worse. Now the killer is back, and she must team up with the town misfit to identify the killer and get back to her own reality.
It’s a Wonderful Knife Comes from the Co-Writer of Freaky
The project came about following Kennedy’s work on Freaky with Christopher Landon. From there, Divide/Conquer wanted to further explore the creative talents of the filmmaker alongside director Tyler MacIntyre, who helmed Tragedy Girls as well as an excellent segment of the anthology horror movie V/H/S/99.
“While working on Freaky we were captivated by Michael Kennedy’s remarkable creativity and became his avid admirers. Collaborating with Tyler Macintyre, a promising rising talent in the genre filmmaking industry, to bring together Michael’s unique fusion of horror and comedy is truly an honor,” Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath said in a statement.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be launching It’s A Wonderful Knife at this year’s Cannes film market, partnering for the first time with Seth Caplan and Divide/Conquer, whose track records on the genre space speak for themselves,” Independent Entertainment’s Sarah Lebutsch also said in a statement. “Michael Kennedy’s outstanding script delivers a roller coaster ride horror audiences around the world will love, and Tyler’s excellent direction combined with our charismatic cast will make for a truly fun Christmas horror to be revisited again and again in holiday seasons to come.”
Given the strong cast and creative talents involved, it’s no wonder that the movie is heading straight to theaters, though that’s a bold move in the industry right now. It’s a Wonderful Knife has the potential to succeed, however, and should bloody up the cheery holiday season quite a bit when it hits theaters Nov. 10.
