Apple is seemingly planning to upgrade the iPhone 17 Pro Max quite a bit, in the camera sense. The device will feature three 48-megapixel cameras if the latest rumor is to be believed.
This information comes from Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst. He went to Medium to publish his latest report, and he touched upon the iPhone 17 Pro Max camera setup.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max will get three 48MP cameras, following a boosted ultrawide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro series
So, what’s the deal here? Well, let’s first talk about the iPhone 16 Pro models, shall we. Apple could end up using a 1/2.6-inch 48MP CIS sensor, which would be an improvement over the 1/3.1-inch 12-megapixel sensor that the iPhone 15 Pro models will offer. We’re talking about the main camera here, of course.
Moving forward, a 48-megapixel camera will also be used on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Kuo previously said that both ‘Pro’ iPhone 16 models will end up utilizing a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera.
That makes it two out of three on the iPhone 16 Pro models, as the 12-megapixel Tetraprism camera from the iPhone 15 Pro Max will make its way to both iPhone 16 Pro devices.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to deliver a better Tetraprism shooter
With the iPhone 17 Pro Max, however, Apple is getting ready for another change. It will stick with 48-megapixel main camera ultrawide cameras, though we may see some changes in that area too.
The third camera, the periscope telephoto one, is expected to get a boost too. Apple will seemingly use a 48-megapixel Tetraprism camera which will be optimized for use with Apple Vision Pro. It will be an upgraded version of the current Tetraprism camera, likely offering better zoom performance, amongst other things.
The iPhone 16 series is expected to debut this September. The iPhone 17 series, however, is expected to arrive in September 2025. That is still far off, but we’ve been seeing an occasional iPhone 17 rumor/leak in the last couple of months.
