Apple is on track to launch their brand new iPhone 17 series in 2025. There have been rumors surrounding a potential new and cheaper model, the iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Air won’t be the only new iPhone model Apple has planned. There have also been rumors that the company is working on a foldable iPhone that could debut in 2026. This could represent quite the shake up in Apple’s iPhone lineup.

The iPhone shake up

In case you haven’t been following the Apple rumor mill, one of the new handsets Apple is expected to introduce in 2025 is the iPhone 17 Air. This is rumored to be a brand new model in the lineup and could potentially replace the iPhone 17 Plus. It is also expected to be 2mm thinner than the current iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models.

Usually when companies introduce thinner products, they can end up being more expensive. This is due to companies finding ways of creating components that do the same thing, but in a smaller package. With the iPhone 17 Air, the Wall Street Journal reports that it could be cheaper than the Pro models.

We can’t say we’re surprised, though. With the iPhone 17 Air potentially replacing the Plus model, the Air could take over the Plus’ price.

In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, the WSJ report seemingly “confirms” Apple’s plans for a foldable iPhone. When unfolded, the foldable iPhone is said to sport a display bigger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, which means this foldable model could have a display 7-inches or larger.

It is unclear if Apple is going for a smartphone-tablet hybrid, or if they might adopt a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series. Apple is said to be targeting a potential launch in 2026, but honestly, it wouldn’t be surprising if those dates get pushed back.

Apple’s obsession with thinness

Making tech products thinner than ever is something many tech companies have been chasing. Chasing the ultimate thinness is something that Apple was known for when designer Jony Ive was still at the company.

During his tenure at Apple, Ive created many products that looked and felt like magic. The unveiling of the first-gen MacBook Air, which Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs pulled out of a manilla envelope, remains one of the most iconic product unveilings in history.

Unfortunately, Ive’s desire to create the thinnest products ever led to quite a few blunders. For instance, the butterfly keyboard that debuted in some of Apple’s older MacBooks was possibly one of the company’s worst decisions of all time. It led to all kinds of issues, resulting in Apple ditching it after several generations.
