Ronny Chieng solves a murder in the trailer for Inspector Sun, the upcoming animated movie from Viva Pictures, coming to theaters on October 27. While fans of Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot can enjoy a new installment of the film saga starring Kenneth Branagh, children will have their own detective on the big screen this Halloween. After debuting at the 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Inspector Sun will finally hit theaters next month.

The movie is set in the world of insects, and follows the titular character after deciding to take some time off to relax, traveling to San Francisco. However, a murder occurs during the flight, and Sun will have to put his skills to use to find out what happened.

“After being fired from his detective job after a mission gone awry, Inspector Sun boards a seemingly normal plane for a much-needed vacation. When Dr. Spindlethorp receives a threat on his life, Sun is back on the case. Trapped in a web of lies, Sun must find his suspect before it’s too late.”

Inspector Sun stars Ronny Chieng, Emily Kleimo, Jennifer Childs Greer, Rich Orlow, and Iain Batchelor. The film is directed by Julio Soto Gurpide, from a script written by Rocco Pucillo.

Born in Malaysia, Ronny Chieng lived part of his life in Singapore, the United States and Australia, the latter country being where he took his first steps as an actor. Between 2012 and 2014 he participated in several Australian television series such as Legally Brown, or It’s a Date, and was part of the game show Have You Been Paying Attention?

In 2015, he got his first big opportunity by joining Comedy Central’s The Daily Show team as a correspondent, a role he continues to play to this day. Meanwhile, he kept collecting titles on the small screen, participating in other productions such as The Katering Show, Scissor Seven, Young Rock, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., American Born Chinese, or Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.

In 2018, he landed his first role in a movie, joining the box office hit Crazy Rich Asians, a film that many hope will soon get a sequel. This project allowed him to later be part of other great blockbusters such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, or M3GAN. This year only he participated in Randall Park’s comedy Shortcomings, Adele Lim’s Joy Ride, and Clay Tarver’s Vacation Friends 2, joining Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji, John Cena, Meredith Hagner, Steve Buscemi, Carlos Santos, Jamie Hector, and Julee Cerda.

Inspector Sun is not the first animated film Chieng has starred in. In 2021 he was part of the cast of Sony Pictures Animation’s Wish Dragon, joining Jimmy Wong, Ian Chen, John Cho, Max Charles, Constance Wu, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jimmy O. Yang, Aaron Yoo, Will Yun Lee, Nico Santos and Bobby Lee.

Inspector Sun is due to be released in the United States on 13 October 2023.
