Amber Heard returns! It’s been two years since the actress appeared as Aquaman’s (Jason Momoa) love interest, Mera, in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and as Nadine Cross in the miniseries The Stand. Aside from those projects, Heard’s presence in the media has been limited to her highly publicized court battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp. But now, Heard is back at work and starring in the upcoming thriller titled In the Fire.

The official synopsis for In the Fire reads as follows:

“A doctor from New York travels to a remote plantation in the 1890s to care for a disturbed boy who seems to have inexplicable abilities. She begins treating the child, but in doing so ignites a war of science versus religion with the local priest who believes the boy is possessed by the Devil and is the reason for all the village’s woes.”

Variety announced back in February of 2022 that Heard would join the In the Fire cast, which also includes Eduardo Noriega, Lorenzo McGovern Zaini and Luca Calvani. At the time of Heard’s casting, producer Andrea Iervolino said:

“We are excited to bring this amazing story to life with Conor [Allyn], and the dynamic trio of Amber, Eduardo and Lorenzo, who gel so beautifully. And we’re always proud to bring another high quality film project to Italy.”

Amber Heard knows her way around a thriller thanks to the actress’ deep roots in the horror genre. Plus, having suited up as a member of the SnyderVerse’s DCEU, Heard is also accustomed to performing in movies showcasing super-powered themes. The footage from In the Fire reveals that Lorenzo McGovern Zaini’s character indeed possesses extraordinary abilities. Heard said in a press release prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike:

“The film is a meditation on the almost supernatural powers of love told through a strong-willed and independent woman at the turn of the 20th century. I feel honored to be part of this labor of love and to be the lead in Conor Allyn’s vision. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such an amazing cast. They’re as dedicated and magical as the characters they play.”

The society surrounding Martin Marquez (Zaini) fear the boy in the brand-new footage, and some try to explain away his being different as dangerous. Grace Burnham (Heard) tries to convince one man that the boy has a “condition,” to which he swiftly presents a Bible as his defense for thinking otherwise.

The words “sickness” and “Satan” are intertwined in the trailer’s text, as are “antidote” and antichrist.” The only physical condition Martin exhibits outwardly that makes him different from those around him is a case of Heterochromia iridum: one of his eyes is blue and the other brown. Whether Martin turns out to be more of a Firestarter (Drew Barrymore), a Carrie (Sissy Spacek), or someone entirely different remains to be seen.

In the Fire begins its theatrical run on Friday, October 13, and the thriller also drops on digital and on-demand that very same day. The film is directed by Conor Allyn, who also co-wrote the project with Pascal Borno and Silvio Muraglia. Saban Films serves as the distributor.
