Fans of Greek mythology are going to want to keep their ears pointed at France. Icare, a strikingly animated feature, is coming to the country on March 30th, and the studio has released a new trailer to celebrate! The trailer can be viewed below!
Icare promises a unique adaptation of the various myths that are connected to both Icarus and the Minotaur. Yes, the stories centering around this film are actually multiple myths that fit together like a set of dominos, which this film appears to be telling the whole story of. Cartoon Brew gives us the synopsis for the film below.
On the island of Crete, every corner is a playground for Icarus, the son of the great inventor Daedalus. During an exploration near the palace of Knossos, the little boy makes a strange discovery: a child with the head of a bull is locked up there by order of King Minos. In secret from his father, Icarus will befriend the young minotaur named Asterion. But fate changes when the latter is taken into a labyrinth. Can Icarus save his friend and change the course of a story written by the gods?
Children of Legends
For those that are unfamiliar, Icarus was the fabled boy who flew too close to the sun. His father, Daedalus, was a great inventor. Daedalus and Icarus were captured and taken to the island of Crete, where Daedalus is forced by King Minos to construct the fabled Labyrinth to imprison his most shameful secret, the Minotaur. After constructing the Labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus are thrown inside, where they make their escape. After capturing various birds, Daedalus constructs a pair of human-sized wings for himself and Icarus to fly away. But, as legend has it, the wax holding the wings together begins to melt as Icarus flies too close to the sun. The boy plummets to his death, and it is here where the story usually ends. As for the Minotaur, who is the child of Queen Pasiphaë, what becomes of him? Sadly, his story ends as he is slain by the hero Theseus, who is helped by princess Ariadne.
What makes this particular adaptation of the stories unique, however, is in Icarus and the Minotaur. In previous adaptations, the two never meet, but in Icare, it appears that they form a secret friendship which causes its own domino effect and rewrites the story as we know it! Maybe this film will have a happier ending for the two of them, but we’ll have to wait for the film to release to find out!
Icare is directed and co-written by Carlo Vogele, a former Pixar employee who worked as an animator on films such as Toy Story 3, Brave, and Monsters University. Icare will be his first directing credit. The film is also co-written by Isabelle Andrivet. The film was produced in Luxembourg, France, and Belgium under the production companies Iris Films, Iris Group, and Iris Productions. Currently, there have been no announcements for any sort of U.S. distribution, but hopefully that news will come soon! Icare will release in France on March 30th.
