At Google I/O, the company has all sorts of demos for different products that it is working on. Sometimes, these demos can be pretty boring and hard to really make content for. Since that’s the main reason why we go to Google I/O every year, to bring you content on what the search giant is doing.
As you likely know, Google has its hands in a lot of areas, and that includes drone deliveries. This is currently known as ‘Wing’. It was previously known as ‘Project Wing’, but now that it has become a sustainable product, it has moved out of the ‘project’ phase. And for the first time ever, Google is showing off how these drones work, at Google I/O. Keep in mind that Project Wing started way back in 2014, so seeing the first drones from Project Wing over a decade later is pretty wild.
How can Google do a demo of drone delivery? Easy. Have Project Wing deliver some pies every few minutes. Who doesn’t love seeing a pie delivered to your feet from a drone?
There is a stand at Google I/O, where they are giving out tiny pies, in a handful of flavors. And next to that, is the landing zone for the Project Wing pie. I will say, the pie itself was pretty good, I had a Lemon Meringue pie.
All of a sudden, a Wing drone comes from out of nowhere
I’m standing there, eating my pie, and all of a sudden, through the trees, I can see a Project Wing drone on its way to deliver a pie. It flies in, over the drop zone, lowers a bit and then lowers the pie from the drone, onto the landing pad.
The drone doesn’t come all the way down to the ground, which is likely a good thing with the number of propellers on it.
Now, this wasn’t a full-sized pie, it was pretty small, so it’s not yet capable of delivering all of your packages. But small things, it’d be able to handle with ease. Of course, Wing could also have larger drones capable of doing larger packages, but the one we saw was fairly small. Not quite on the level of some of the DJI drones we’ve seen over the years, though.

Drone delivery is something many companies are working on
Many companies, like Amazon and Walmart, are working on drone delivery. Because this means they would be able to deliver your orders without needing to hire so many delivery drivers. It would also allow these e-commerce giants to get your orders to you faster. And who doesn’t want to get their order even faster?
Wing says that you can get food, groceries ,and deliveries in 15 minutes or less. This is going to be great for delivering medicine, ingredients you might have forgotten, or even last minute items you need for an upcoming trip.
It also announced that it recently expanded to Charlotte, North Carolina. Wing was already available in Christiansburg, Virginia, and Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, Texas in the US. It’s also available in Canberra and Logan, in Australia. And recently expanded to Helsinki, Finland. Putting Wing in a bunch of, seemingly random cities and countries around the world.
