Waze has announced a new feature quite recently, a feature called ‘Retro Mode’. Waze is no stranger to adding interesting features, that are temporary, though. This one seems to be one of those, and it brings back time, kind of. Thanks to ‘Retro Mode’, you can change Waze’s appearance, and return back to the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. This mode allows you to change the overall ‘mood’ of the app, the car appearance, and even the sound of turn-by-turn directions. In this article, we’ll show you how to enable and set up ‘Retro Mode’ in Waze.
You’ll need to make sure that you have the Waze app installed, and ready to go, of course. So if you do not, you’ll need to go through the setup process first. Once you’re done with that, we’re ready to go. This mode could make things more interesting for your upcoming trip, or something of the sort. Below you’ll find step-by-step instructions on how to set it up, and we’ve also included a bunch of screenshots to help you along the way.
How to enable & set up ‘Retro Mode’ in Waze
Once you open up the app, you’ll see the ‘My Waze’ section at the bottom. Tap it.
Once the side menu opens, you’ll notice the ‘Drive with the 80’s’ section, which is what we’re after, of course.
Now, once you tap that, a brand new menu will open, with three separate options. Those options are Moods, Car, and Voice directions. We’ll click through each of those, as each of them allows you to change specific things. We’ll kick things off with ‘Moods’.
There are three options here you can choose from, Groovy (lava lamp icon), Pumped! (boombox icon), and Dialed Up (Mac icon). They represent the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s, respectively. We’ll go for the first option here, ‘Groovy’. We’ll aim for the 70s setup all the way, for the sake of the tutorial, but feel free to choose something else.
Once we’ve set up ‘Moods’, it’s time to move on. Let’s go to the ‘Car’ menu.
You’ll see the El Vanarino (VW bus icon), Rad Racer (race car icon), and SUV4EVA (SUV icon) options. These three also represent the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s, respectively. We’ll go for the ‘El Vanarino’ option for the sake of the tutorial.
The menu that remains is ‘Voice directions’.
In it, you have the 70’s DJ, 80’s Aerobics Instructor, and 90’s Pop Star options. As you probably guessed already, we’ll aim for the 70’s option this time around.
There you go, once everything is set up, feel free to tap ‘Done’, and have your Waze change all around. Do note that you may have to load the app again, though. Another thing to mention is that you can mix and match between the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s, options, of course.
