The Sanderson Sisters ride again in the new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2 which was revealed as part of Friday’s live-action panel at Disney’s D23 Expo. The full length trailer gives a better look at the return of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson, who once again wreak havoc in Salem on Halloween after being revived by the lighting of The Black Flame Candle by a new group of teenagers. Check out the brand new trailer below.
The new trailer reveals a look at the origin of the three Salem witches, which goes back to when the Sandersons were children. These scenes have already been teased in a number of set photos and some more recent official pictures from the production, and will likely form a prologue to the movie. Similar to 1993’s Hocus Pocus, the witches are brought into the modern day when the Black Flame Candle is lit, and this leads them into a whole new adventure. As well as some comedic moments of the Sandersons getting to grips with the new modern world, the trailer also gives a new look at the revival of Doug Jones’ Billy Butcherson.
Hocus Pocus 2 Joins A Nostalgic Run Of Disney+ Movies
While the story may be a familiar one, the anticipation for the new sequel almost guarantees another hit on Disney+ when the movie premieres on September 30. With Hocus Pocus having been a regular fixture of the Halloween season for almost three decades, the continuation of the Sandersons’ story will be a draw for both new and old fans, and will be a welcome addition to the new movies and shows coming to Disney+ next month.
The film joins other new additions to Disney+ that drawn on older IPs, in a continued run of nostalgic throwbacks that aim to reinvigorate old franchises, while providing an almost never-ending amount of content for Disney’s streaming platform. Having released their live-action version of Pinocchio earlier this week, Disney+ will see a number of sequel projects arriving in the coming months including Disenchanted, a sequel to 2007 hit Enchanted that sees Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden returning for more fantasy fun, and a new sequel series to the Warwick Davis movie Willow.
While there are many who have mocked Disney, commenting on social media that the House of Mouse has run out of creativity and are having to rely on rehashing their older properties in order to put out new content. While there are arguments for both sides of that coin, there is no denying that Disney have one of the largest and most iconic back catalogues of family entertainment in the industry, and with Hollywood loving nothing more than to recycle movies and TV shows that are over thirty years old to bring in the new stars of the day and attached a new audience, there is no way that Disney are going to miss out.
Hocus Pocus 2 will premiere on Disney+ on September 30.
