Here’s What Meta’s Upcoming Smartwatch Could Look Like

A patent filing by Meta last month revealed plans for a smartwatch with some unique features, including a detachable or removable display. The patent filing suggested that Meta wants to offer VR and AR functions with the new wearable, complete with multiple cameras. We’re now being treated to renders based on the patent filing, giving us a decent idea of what to expect.

These renders of the “Meta Band” were created by designer Sarang Sheth on behalf of LetsGoDigital. The site notes that although the original patent referenced, the designer has also included some other elements to complement the overall design. So while the final product may not look exactly like this, the renders should tell us what Meta wants to achieve with the new smartwatch.

As you can see from the renders, the shape is somewhat unique and never before seen on a smartwatch. Although the screen is square in shape, the case appears to be rectangular. There’s a blue elastic-style strap that can stretch from either side. This narrow elastic band/strap could be a neat feature if Meta decides to include it with the final product.

Meta seemingly wants to market this as more than just a conventional smartwatch

Cameras are also a key feature on the Meta wearable, aided by the detachable screen. These cameras allow customers to capture photos or videos and engage in video calls. While the screen contains a camera within the notch, there’s another sensor on the back, based on these renders.

LetsGoDigital claims the wearable could function as a viewfinder or directly upload content to Facebook or Instagram. There’s also the likelihood of a simultaneous video recording feature with the front and rear cameras, respectively. But this could be wishful thinking on our part.

Considering the obvious limitations of a smartwatch, it will be interesting to see how Meta will cram in these cameras. And if it does, can it match the quality of modern-day smartphones? There are more questions than answers right now, but this gives us a good glimpse of Meta’s plans for the future.

It will be an engineering marvel if the company manages to fit in good cameras on a device of this size. Of course, a wearable like this would also fit in nicely with Meta’s ambitious plans for the metaverse. We’ll keep an ear to the ground for any additional information on this wearable.
