Halloween Ends is coming this fall to put a nail in the coffin of the popular Halloween franchise that’s been playing out for 44 years. Now that the trailer’s dropped, we see Laurie Strode and Michael Myers face to face in an epic showdown. And this time, Laurie is more determined for revenge than ever. She’s faced this invincible demon about 200 times and now looks ready to put an end to it.
The trailer alone sets up Halloween Ends for a fantastic franchise return. With a lot of excellent callbacks to the previous films, Ends seems like it’s going to be the homage we all need it to be for the conclusion of this incredible franchise.
Now, even with just the trailer, there are plenty of questions and fan theories about the film, and we’ll try to include some of them here. But there are a lot of things to take apart. Fans that have been watching since 1978 will surely recognize a lot of what’s going on, just from the horrifying memories they have of the first films. There are a lot of worries as well because of how unpopular Halloween Kills was. But if this trailer is any indication, fans of the series are in for one fantastic final ride.
Laurie and Michael’s Showdown
According to sources, this movie will take place four years after Halloween Kills. David Gordon Green will direct again, and it will round out his trilogy. Since Laurie finished the last film injured, she’s had plenty of time to heal and prepare for this endless onslaught that has haunted her for decades.
The trailer opens on a lovely little shot of children trick or treating around a quiet suburban neighborhood and moves straight into that very familiar, first-person POV camera that leads us into the Myers’ house. The shot is a direct callback to the very first Halloween when 6-year-old Michael Myers killed his sister. We even get the ominous heavy breathing from behind the camera. But when Michael reaches the top of the stairs, what do we see? Laurie Strode pointing a gun straight at Michael’s face.
While there will undoubtedly be numerous victims in the movie, although perhaps not as many as Halloween Kills, fans hope that Jamie Lee Curtis’s Laurie will not be one of them. We see Laurie scream, but not out of fear. She is screaming in pure unadulterated rage. As the trailer moves forward, Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) makes an appearance, along with shots of teenagers in the final moments before they are surprised, choked, or brutally murdered by Michael. Officer Hawkins (Will Patton) runs to an almost-rescue, so we can expect to see him again.
And next, in a surprising battle, Michael attempts to force Laurie’s hand into a garbage disposal. However, Laurie hits him with the back of her head, grabs his knife off the ground, and stabs Michael in the hand. It looks like Laurie is ready to face this terrible fate and won’t be running from it this time.
Michael is Back…Or is He?
The biggest fan theory out at the moment is that the movie will feature several copycat Michaels. The idea seems to hold water because it looks like Laurie immediately kills him right at the start of the trailer. Originally this was thought to be a plot-leak where fans thought Michael Myers would die 5 minutes into the film, and now it’s been adapted into the theory that there’s more than one Michael.
One suggestion that has been made to support this argument is that Michael’s mask looks a bit differently colored from one shot to the next. But we know the real Michael will show up – at least eventually – because in the shot of Laurie stabbing Michael in the hand, we see that the hand is missing two fingers.
Much of the trailer is already an homage to the older Halloween films. From the classic stalking scenes to the characters from the franchise’s other movies showing up again. There’s a shot of Laurie hiding behind a door that looks very similar to the time she was hiding in a closet in the first film. Laurie’s clothes also harken back to what she wore in previous movies. The trailer also takes several shots from Halloween Kills and other films and juxtaposes them with what we’ll be seeing this fall. Some of the shots also look similar to previously retconned Halloween timelines, so it seems like this movie will pay homage to all of the Halloween films, as we have seen in Green’s previous films.
All in all, if the trailer is any indication, it looks like the filmmakers have been listening to what fans want, and we’re in for one scary ride. The film comes out on October 14, 2022, and we can’t wait.
