Having just arrived on Netflix, there will be plenty of subscribers streaming Griselda, Netflix’s latest Latin American crime drama centered on the infamous “Black Widow” Griselda Blanco. For those unaware, a second season isn’t happening, and we’re here to explain why.

Griselda is a Netflix Original crime drama series created by the team behind the beloved Narcos franchise. The series is centered around the life of the infamous Colombian drug queen, Griselda Blanco, played by Sofía Vergara, and the chokehold she had on the drug scene in Miami, Florida, in the 1980s.

Ingrid Escajeda and Doug Miro were the two showrunners of the series, co-creators, and executive producers.

Why isn’t Griselda returning for a second season?

The simplest and shortest answer is Griselda was always only ever meant to be a limited series.

If a second season were ever on the cards, this would have been discussed when the series was being optioned.

Story aside, a second season would unlikely happen, even if Griselda proves incredibly popular. A perfect example of a limited series but fans wanting more is Queen’s Gambit. Despite its popularity and hunger for a second season, Netflix never greenlit a second season.

Griselda Ending Explained

Her drug empire was built atop a mountain of cocaine and the bodies of her enemies. Still, after working so hard to become the drug queen of Miami, Griselda’s paranoia and insecurity is what began her downfall.

Federal Agent June was determined to see Griselda put away. She theorized that Griselda was potentially acting out of fear and was cleaning house by having some of her men murdered by Rivi. Determined to push Griselda into believing there was an informant who never existed in the first place, June took a calculated risk by raiding one of the safe houses. The risk paid off, as this thrust Griselda into a deep state of paranoia, making many mistakes in an extremely short period.

  • Griselda accused her husband of cheating on her with her assistant. She likely would have murdered her assistant if she hadn’t driven away in time.
  • Griselda embarrassed some of her associates by making Jack bark like a dog on all fours, and two others were forced into having sex with each other.
  • Griselda accused her best friend Carmen of being a rat for the feds after Carmen told her Agent June offered her a deal for information about Griselda. This also led to Griselda almost murdering Carmen.

After an altercation between Jesus Chucho and her son Dixon, which resulted in the latter almost being arrested, Griselda orders Rivi to murder him. However, things don’t go to plan as Rivi’s drive-by attempt fails to kill Chucho and accidentally kills his two-year-old son, Johnny. Carmen then takes the deal from CENTEC, ready to give up Griselda.

Griselda’s life continues to spiral out of control after getting high with Marta Ochoa, which resulted in Marta falling through a glass table, killing her. This moment would mean any business with the Ochoas is over. Griselda and Rivi didn’t have enough time to take care of Marta’s body and were only able to steal some of the cocaine blocks the Ochoas had stashed in their home. To make matters worse, Dario fled the country with their son Michael.

Griselda flees Miami with Rivi and the rest of her sons, heading to California to try to restart her life. However, the Ochoas are not far behind and already have a lead on her whereabouts. This results in Rivi robbing a bank for a roll of quarters to warn Griselda the Ochoas are on their way.

In a clever move, Griselda gets her sons to safety before phoning the cops on herself. They arrive just in time to arrest her before the Ochoas can murder her. Griselda’s attempt at a plea deal is taken off the table by Agent June, who uses Rivi against her and can have him arrested for the kidnapping of her third son, Osvaldo. With his life on the line, Rivi agrees to a deal with the feds to give up everything he knows about Griselda’s operation.

However, Rivi had one last trick up his sleeve. He was able to seduce the DA’s assistant and was recorded having phone sex with her on multiple occasions. Now no longer a strong witness against Griselda, the case against her became significantly weaker, where she would only receive 7-8 years in jail. During her sentence, Dario was assassinated, and Michael was reunited with his brothers.

One last tragic twist of fate was in store for Griselda. Just before her jail sentence was over, Agent June went to visit her to notify her of the death of three of her sons. As for her youngest, Michael, he was taken back to Colombia, where his grandmother was caring for him.

Narcos is Returning to Netflix with an El Chapo Spin-Off

So what is the good news? There’s a potential return for Narcos on the cards, with a spin-off centered around El Chapo, the infamous leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.

We previously reported on this last year, where it was our understanding that the series was still in early development. Little progress has been made, and we’re still awaiting updates on the series’ status. However, if the series has been shelved, then we’ve not been made aware of this, so as it currently stands, we still expect to see the return of the Narcos franchise on Netflix sometime soon.
