Earlier this month, Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat was leaked. Everything indicated that the next-generation product was very close, bringing some major improvements. Now, the device has been officially announced, including new features and recovering others that had been lost.
This is Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat
The latest Nest Learning Thermostat is a direct successor to the model launched in 2014. So, fans of these products have had to wait a decade to get a proper new-gen. In between, the company has launched other products in the lineup, but at a lower range.
Aesthetically, the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) is reminiscent of a giant Google Pixel Watch. Its glass screen is dome-shaped and it has a shiny finish, also being up to 60% larger than that of the latest Nest Thermostat launched in 2020. The screen shows data such as home temperature, outdoor temperature, time, air quality, weather, and more. The device integrates a Soli radar to detect when someone passes in front of it and thus display useful data for their day.
Similar to a smartwatch, there is a rotating bezel to navigate through the UI or tweak temperature parameters. This is one of the features that Google is bringing back after discarding it in recent models. The company had switched to touch controls that were not intuitive for users.
Now with AI-powered tweaks and recommendations
The “Learning” in the name of the device is not a random word, much less in the current Google that invests so much in AI-powered experiences. The latest Nest Learning Thermostat can take your schedule as a basis to make modifications according to detected habits and conditions. For example, it can take into account the outside weather to modify the home temperature and ventilation. It can also make temperature adjustments based on the time you usually wake up.
The device is compatible with the Google Home app, but not with the Nest app. This is normal since Google’s plans are to integrate all the Nest app functionality into its own platform. However, Apple ecosystem users can use it with Apple’s Home app. It also supports the Matter standard for compatible smart home setups. Of course, the product also includes a Nest Temperature sensor. The sensor is shaped like an oval stone and allows it to be placed anywhere (even on walls with a base).
The Google Home app will be more informative than in previous Nest Thermostat products. Users will now get a description of the reason for the parameter changes implemented by the device. You can also choose to receive a notification to approve each change before it is applied. Overall, the goal of the product is to improve comfort while saving money with tweaks based on automatic analysis of multiple items.
Price and availability
The new Nest Learning Thermostat is now available for pre-order at the Google Store. You can get it for $279.99 (US) or $379.99 (Canada). A Nest Temperature sensor comes in the box, but you can purchase more for $39.99 (single) or $99.99 (3-pack). The Thermostat will be available for direct purchase starting August 20. Lastly, there are three colorways: Polished Obsidian, Polished Gold, and Polished Silver.
