Many people expected Google’s new Pixel 9 phones to support Qi2 charging standard, but that’s not the case. Neither Pixel 9 phone has the ring of magnets used in the Qi2 standard.
The Google Pixel 9 series devices do not support the Qi2 standard
Why is that? Well, chances are that the Pixel 9 series was already in development when Qi2 was finalized. There is a chance that the Pixel 10 series will end up offering Qi2 support next yera, a very good chance.
You still do get wireless charging with all four Pixel 9 devices, though. The charging speeds do differ from one model to the next, and you’ll also need the Pixel Stand in order to reach maximum speeds. They are compatible with Qi charging in general, though, albeit limited to 12W.
Various case OEMs can always include charging magnets in a case. They did that for the Pixel 8 series, for example, so we’re expecting the same for the Pixel 9 smartphones.
We’re still waiting for the Qi2 charging standard to properly kick off
The support for the Qi2 standard hasn’t really kicked off thus far. The HMD Skyline, for example, does support it, but we’re waiting for more devices to step over to that side.
It’s also worth noting that the Pixel 9 smartphones don’t come with a charger in the box. Google is recommending its 45W charger, of course, but you’re not obligated to use it.
Now, as many of you know by now, Google announced three slab Pixel 9 phones and one foldable. You can even choose between two ‘Pro’ slab phones now, which are basically equally powerful, but different in terms of their sizes.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, on the other hand, is a notable improvement compared to the Pixel Fold. It also looks considerably different than its predecessor. Google even changed the aspect ratio. There’s something for everyone this time around.
