Google has released the July update for the Pixel Watch lineup. Both models are getting the new security update globally, though it could take a while before the OTA firmware build reaches everyone. The company is yet to roll out the latest security patch to Pixel phones.

Pixel Watch and Watch 2 get Google’s July update

The July update for the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 comes with the firmware build number or software version TWD9.240705.001.A1. Unsurprisingly, the update is all about the latest security fixes and doesn’t bring anything more. Google’s smartwatches picked up a massive update in June, a new Feature Drop adding support for Car Crash Detection, NFC support for PayPay payments, new Google Home watch face complications, and more.

This time around, users are getting a bunch of security patches. “The July 2024 software update includes the latest security patches for Pixel Watch users,” the official release notes state. It doesn’t mention any other bug fixes, performance improvements, or new features. Like in the past, this update should bump the security patch level to “July 5, 2024” on both Google watches. 9to5Google confirmed it for the first-gen Pixel Watch.

Google says the July update is rolling out to the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 globally. It expects the rollout to be completed in about two weeks. The update will gradually reach more users depending on the device model, location, and carrier. Like before, you will receive a notification once the OTA (over the air) build reaches your watch. You can also use the Settings app (Settings > System > System updates) to manually check for updates.

The age-old trick of repeatedly tapping the “your watch is up to date” screen still works. If you see this screen when checking for updates, tap on the screen multiple times in quick succession to forcefully trigger the update. Turning off Bluetooth to force a Wi-Fi connection speeds up the downloading process. Ensure sufficient battery level before proceeding. The Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 should get the Wear OS 5 update later this year.

Pixel phones could follow anytime now

Usually, Google rolls out its latest monthly security patches to Pixel phones, tablets, and watches around the same time. On some occasions, watches get the update a few days later. This is a rare occasion where the update reached the wearable lineup before the phones. Hopefully, the company won’t keep Pixel phone users waiting for much longer. You can check for updates from the Settings app. Go to System > System update and tap Check for update.
