It appears that Google Wallet users in California will be able to save their local ID cards soon. This means they won’t have to use the dedicated California app for that purpose.

Google Wallet users in California could save their digital ID cards

In the US, certain states have developed their own apps so that citizens can save a digital copy of their ID cards. California is one of them, and now it seems that its local DMV is starting to test support for ID cards in the Google Wallet app. Currently, California users must install the CA DMV Wallet app to carry a digital ID with them.

As reported by 9to5Google, once California ID card support is implemented in Google Wallet, users won’t need to carry around the CA DMV Wallet app. However, they can keep both if they wish. The source claims that the process for adding an ID card will be fairly simple. Upon opening the Google Wallet app, users can tap the classic “Add to Wallet” button to get started. Then, they must tap on the “ID Card” option and follow the instructions to add their mDL (digital ID card).

A description on the Wallet app states that people can use their saved ID at “select TSA terminals at SFO, SJC, LAX.” However, the app also warns that the digital ID is not a full replacement for the physical document. Another description says that you should still “carry your physical DL/ID with you.” According to the source, Google Wallet support for California ID cards is in beta. Currently, only state DMV employees can use the feature.

Physical document scanning is still in development

This option is different than the previously leaked physical document scanning feature. This one will work for documents not natively supported by the Google Wallet app. Additionally, the digital cards will be generated from a photo of the physical document. The scanned documents will be available in an “Everything Else” tab within the Wallet app. It is not yet known when this feature will be available.
