It appears that today, Google is going to unveil Android 15. We expect that it will be available in AOSP today, as we’ve already confirmed that the update isn’t hitting Pixel devices until next month. With that, Android’s VP of Engineering, Dave Burke, has snapped a picture showing off the new Android 15 Statue.
The statue is of a bug droid holding a vanilla ice cream cone on a park bench. Internally, Google has stuck with the dessert-themed names for each version of Android. And with Android 15, they are on V, which is said to be Vanilla Ice Cream. So, the statue makes loads of sense.
The statue unveiling used to be a big deal for Google, and they used to have press events for it. Though, these days, it appears to be more for the teams at Google, especially the Android team that worked on the newest version of Android.
Android 15 likely heading to AOSP today
Since the statue has already been unveiled, this likely means that Android 15 will be heading to AOSP today. This is going to allow non-GMS partners to start using the newest version of Android for their products. This includes partners like Amazon and Huawei, who don’t use Google Mobile Services. This is not going to be the Pixel update to Android 15 that everyone’s waiting on. Google has already confirmed that Android 15 will land on Pixel devices next month.
The road to Android 15 was a bit interesting this year, particularly since the Pixel devices were made available about two months earlier than usual. Google typically announces new Pixels in October, but this year, the event was held on August 13, with the last couple of new Pixel devices starting to ship this week. Which forced Google to ship Pixel 9 with Android 14, and I honestly think that was a great idea. Typically, Pixels launch with a boatload of bugs, but that’s not the case this year. There have been very few bugs reported so far, a stark contrast from previous Pixel releases.
