Remember when Google introduced AI Overviews in its search results? Well, it turns out the company isn’t done integrating its AI features just yet. According to an announcement by YouTube, the video platform is testing out AI Overviews in YouTube search results as well.
According to YouTube, “We’re experimenting with a new video results carousel that appears after entering certain search queries. This new feature will use AI to highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query, providing another way to discover content when searching on YouTube as well as discover topics and information related to your search query.”
YouTube also notes that these AI Overviews will most likely appear when searching for product information. “This is most likely to show when you search for more information about products you’re shopping for (such as “best noise cancelling headphones”), or when you search for more information about locations or things to do in those locations (such as “museums to visit in San Francisco”).”
Limited availability, but good potential
At the moment, YouTube says that the feature is only available to a small number of YouTube Premium members in the US. This means that non-Premium users and those living outside the US will have to wait for the feature to arrive for them, if it arrives at all.
While we’re not a fan of companies trying to stuff AI into everything, Google’s AI Overviews can be pretty handy if you just want a quick answer to a simple question. Obviously, the results might not be 100% accurate, so you should always double-check, but in a pinch, it’s useful.
However, AI Overviews integration into YouTube is kind of interesting. There are many YouTube videos out there, and many creators try to game the system with catchy thumbnails and titles. Unfortunately, such tactics can sometimes lead to you wasting time watching a video that isn’t what you’re after.
At least with YouTube testing AI Overviews, it has the potential to cut through the noise and get you to where you want. We don’t know how effective it is since we haven’t tried it out yet, but if you are one of those lucky users that are part of the test, let us know how it goes!
