Google has released the September security patch for the Pixel smartphones. The update reportedly fixes Wi-Fi issues faced by Pixel 9 smartphones.

Google releases update that fixes Wi-Fi issues on some Pixel 9 smartphones

Google started shipping the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL to buyers a couple of weeks ago. The new Pixel 9 series smartphones are being praised for new upgrades. However, several reviews also claim they have their fair share of problems.

Quite a few early adopters and reviewers claimed there are wireless charging issues on the Pixel 9 (review) series. A few users also complained about the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s abnormal camera tilt, and there were complaints about touch-related problems as well.

Although there were no widespread complaints about Wi-Fi issues, Google claims it has fixed any potential problems. Specifically speaking, the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold are getting their first post-launch update.

The Android 14 September security patch includes a couple of fixes for the Pixel 9 smartphones. According to the official release notes, the latest security patch for Pixel smartphones has the following fixes:

Security

  • Fix to remove third-party APK to address security vulnerability

Wi-Fi

  • Fix to improve wireless (Wi-Fi) stability  and performance in certain conditions

The “Security” fix is intended for Pixel-branded smartphones ranging from the Pixel 6 to Pixel 8a. It essentially removes a Verizon demo “Showcase” APK. This app required unlocking the device among other steps, which could be considered as a security risk.

The “Wi-Fi” fix is meant for all Pixel 9 smartphones. The version of the fix varies according to the exact device, reported 9to5Google. Regardless of the version, the patch claims to improve Wi-Fi stability.

Google Pixel 9 users facing Wi-Fi issues should apply the patch

There have been sporadic complaints about Wi-Fi issues on the latest Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Some users have posted about the issues on Google Support forums.

It appears some apps fail to connect and transmit (download and upload) data when the Pixel 9 smartphone is using Wi-Fi. Rebooting the phone doesn’t alleviate the issue. Switching to cellular data fixes data transmission.

Some of the affected Users have claimed that the distance between the Pixel 9 device and the Wi-Fi router doesn’t matter. Neither does lowering the security standard or latching onto an unsecured Wi-Fi connection. Needless to add, connecting to such networks is a security risk.
