Google has started to roll out topic filters for its search results on desktop. The new feature allows users to have a refined search and gather more related information about a query.

Search is a big part of Google’s business. Despite the company’s efforts to diversify its business and enter new segments, like hardware, search and advertising still account for a large portion of Google revenues. The tech giant traditionally refines search results with various filters, including Images, Maps, Shopping, Videos, News, Books, Flights, and Finance.

Google is now adding related topic filters to the search results. The company says these topic filters will help users “drill down or discover something new about a specific topic.” The new topics are distinguished by plus signs and add more related information to your query.

Desktop users can now refine their Google search with topic filters

Topic filters were added to Google search on mobile in December, and it’s good to have them on desktop too. The filters are designed dynamically and change once a user taps on them, allowing for gathering more data around a topic.

“For example, if you’re searching for “dinner ideas,” you might see topics like “healthy” or “easy.” Tapping on a topic adds it to your query, helping you quickly refine your search results with less typing.” Google said. “Topics are dynamic and will change as you tap, giving you more options and helping you explore new areas. For example, if you tapped on “healthy,” you might see “vegetarian” or “quick” appear next.”

Google says it automatically displays relevant topics based on its understanding of your searched query and available content on the web. There is also an “All filters” option at the end of the row that shows more filters if you can’t find a particular filter.

The Google search page on mobile also got a minor tweak. In the new update, icons beside each filter are gone, and you now just see text inside an oval. The change is not yet widely rolled out. The icons were added to search filters in 2019 as a part of the Google Material Theme makeover.
