Somewhat surprising, but Google’s Play Store has decided to ditch the Dynamic Color Theming that Android debuted with Android 12 a couple of years ago. Instead, making all accents in the Play Store, Blue now. No matter what accents you have set on your phone, the Play Store will show blue accents.

The Play Store had used dynamic color theming, for quite some time. It was mostly in the search bar, the top tabs and bottom bar. It was rather subtle, but looked really nice with the accents on the rest of the system. Dynamic Coloring was not available in other parts of the app, like on the individual app listings. Google continued to use a green accent color for the developer name and the install button. Which is still the case, even with the move to Blue.

The update is rolling out

As is the case with most Google apps, the update is a staged one and is still rolling out. For instance, I have the new Blue accent on my Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it’s still using dynamic colors on my ASUS Zenfone 10. So you may or may not see it on your device today.

Google has also just finished fully rolling out the new “Sync app to devices” option in Google Play. So you can sync all of your apps across all of your devices. This is very helpful if you have multiple phones, tablets, watches, etc.

Google does like to test out small subtle changes across its apps. But this is likely a change that’s sticking around for a while, as it’s now rolling out to everyone and not just a small group of users. However, that does not mean that this won’t change again in the future. Google is always testing out different changes for different reasons. Whether to make the app easier to use, make users want to use it more, or some other reason.
