Many eligible Google Pixel phones are starting to receive the last Android 14 stable update. The Android 15 beta schedule has been fulfilled as expected, so a stable rollout is expected in September. Although the Google Pixel 9 series will arrive this month (August), they are not expected to come with Android 15 out of the box. The Google Pixel Watch series recently received the August patch ahead of the Wear OS 5 rollout too.
The last Android 14 update is now reaching eligible Google Pixel devices
Regarding the Android 15 stable update, it is expected to arrive in the period corresponding to the next Quarterly Platform Release. Usually, new Pixel phones debut the latest Android version. However, in an unexpected turn, Google brought forward its Made by Google event to August. For reference, the company used to hold it in October.
Coming back to the new Pixel’s Android 14 update, it is expected to be the last one. Only a potential bug that severely affects a key feature would force a new update in the form of a hotfix. All Google Pixel devices from the Pixel 5a 5G onwards are eligible to receive the update. The OTA has the build name AP2A.240805.005 for most models, with slight variations on some.
Google’s blog post says that the rollout is being done in phases. Therefore, not all devices will receive the OTA availability notification at the same time. It also has a lot to do with whether your phone is carrier-free or not. However, you can always manually check for the update’s availability from System > Software updates > System update > Check for updates.
The OTA brings some optimizations and bug fixes
According to the changelog, the new firmware fixes a “screen brightness flickering” issue. It also includes “improvements for display performance and stability.” It also fixes a bug where some Pixel devices (mainly Pixel 6 series) would get bricked if you factory reset them after less than 15 minutes of applying an update. Lastly, the OTA fixes a bug related to user profile switching.
