It seems that Google Photos will add an option to mass delete backups made from a particular device. This could help you save a lot of cloud space (and time) in certain situations.

Android Authority spotted the potential new feature in the latest Google Photos app update (6.87). According to the report, the app’s code now includes strings about a new option called “Undo backup for this device.” The strings also include a fairly clear and explicit description of how the feature works. It says that it will “Delete all backed-up photos and videos from this device in Google Photos, without deleting anything from your device.”

A new Google Photos option could let you easily remove entire backups

Currently, Google Photos does not offer options to mass delete backups from any particular device. It only allows you to choose which folders on your devices will be uploaded to your account. Now, you would have the option to remove backups created accidentally by always using the auto-backup feature. You could also simply free up all the cloud space occupied by files backed up from a previous device. Everything in a few taps and whenever you want. The latter would be especially useful if you change your phone frequently for one reason or another.

The potential new Google Photos feature is not yet functional. For now, there are only strings that mention its name and how it will work. It is not yet known when Google will implement the “Undo backup for this device” option for everyone. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long to arrive. Having more options when it comes to freeing up cloud space or simply managing how you make backups will be a welcome addition.

Also, keep in mind that potential new features detected in source code do not always make the cut. However, the strings for the option to mass delete backups are available in the stable version of the Google Photos app. This makes a mass implementation a little more likely.
