Google prioritized apps when it comes to dark mode, and it had some catching up to do when it comes to web layouts. The company brought dark mode to Drive and Calendar web layouts a while back, and now Google Photos is following.
Dark mode is finally available for Google Photos’ web layout
Once I opened photos.google.com on my PC, a pop-up showed up in the top-right corner. That blue pop-up said the following: “Dark mode is here! You can now apply a dark theme to Photos”, and you can see it below.
All you have to do in order to enable dark mode is head to the settings gear icon up top, and find the ‘Appearance’ section. In there, you’ll be able to choose between Light, Dark, and Use device default modes.
The moment you select ‘Dark’, your entire web Photos layout will switch over to dark mode. Google, as many of you know, is not using pitch black dark mode, but opts for a dark gray background. It’s the same across all Google apps, on both the web and mobile.
Google is using different shades of gray here
You’ll notice different shades of gray throughout the layout, though. For example, the search bar is lighter than the background itself, and the top bar is somewhere in between the two.
At this point in time, Google has dark mode available for quite a few of its web layouts. It’s available in Calendar, Drive, Gemini, Gmail, YouTube, and more.
One area where it’s not yet available is Google Docs, unfortunately. That would be very useful as many people spend a lot of time in their documents. There are workarounds via flags and extensions, but that doesn’t work as well as a native dak mode would, of course. Let’s hope Google will provide us with that option soon.
