Google Maps is getting the power of Gemini Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI). Newly introduced “Ask Maps” and other updates will use the power of Gen AI to answer queries about travel, weather, navigation, and more.
Gemini to help answer queries in Google Maps
Google has been actively infusing the power of its Gemini Gen AI within most of its products, services, and platforms. Recently, the company added two new Gemini AI-powered features to Gmail.
Google has reportedly announced multiple AI updates for Google Maps, Google Earth, and Waze. The new features rely on Gemini’s natural language capabilities. They will answer questions that travelers have to often search online.
The highlight of the update is undoubtedly “Ask Maps”. It is similar to the Ask Photos feature that Google Photos received which lets users ask questions to get answers from their Photos library.
The Ask Maps feature can help answer some complex questions that need a lot of contexts. Google claims users can use the Ask Maps feature to suggest some fun activities nearby.
Gemini AI will use “review content” from places nearby to provide a list of relevant options. Additionally, the Gen AI can also summarize “review sentiment” for individual eateries, businesses, and other places of interest. Users can dive deep to get answers to their queries using natural language.
Google is using AI to improve navigation
Waymo recently indicated Gemini AI is helping improve navigation for its fleet of robotaxis. Simply put, Gen AI integration within navigation products is growing steadily.
Moving forward, Google Maps will show lanes, crosswalks, and signage. Such a high level of detail might not be available for every location. However, Google Maps should be able to report weather disruptions, even while driving.
Gemini AI will accept driver inputs to help other drivers. In addition to speed traps and stopped cars, drivers will be able to report conditions like low visibility or unplowed snowy roads. Needless to say, drivers will be able to see reports from other users.
Waze is also allowing certain “trusted testers” to report issues in a natural way. In other words, Gemini AI will accept, process, and add reports such as “there’s a car with a flat tire” or “a trash can fell over in the road”.
Google is adding 3D renditions of areas in 150 cities around the world to the “Immersive View” feature. Moreover, the search giant is adding more categories such as college campuses.
