Google is reportedly working on Gmail & Calendar apps for Wear OS

According to 9to5Google, Google is working on releasing the Gmail and Calendar app for Wear OS devices, including Pixel Watch.

The report continues that Google has started to test the Calendar and Gmail apps for the platform. However, the source can’t confirm whether apps allow users to create new events or compose an email. But the experience is described as “full” to 9to5Google.

Over the past few months, Google has been quite busy redesigning and overhauling its different apps for the Wear OS platform. Google Camera, Keep, and Play Store apps for Wear OS were all updated with the Material You redesign. But this time, the Mountain View-based company wants to release at least two new apps for the Wear OS.

Calendar and Gmail apps are on the way for Wear OS

Since smartwatches are becoming an integral part of our lives, they need more apps to offer a better user experience. Releasing the Calendar and Gmail apps for Wear OS will allow users to create events, compose an email on their wrists, and reduce the need to access smartphones. Google is also reportedly preparing to launch the News app for Wear OS.

While both apps might be released to Wear OS in the coming months, Google offers similar experiences through the Agenda app and email notifications. The Agenda app can show your next event and allows for planning only three days ahead. Additionally, you need to rely on Google Assistant to create new events.

But accessing emails in Wear OS is a pain. They are only accessible through the notifications feed, and there is no inbox to return to the already-read emails. Compared to the Apple Watch Mail app and Outlook for Wear OS, the current experience of emails in Wear OS is imperfect and needs a lot of work.

Google Pixel Watch was one of the most anticipated devices of the year. Enriching it with new, polished apps will stoke users’ interest and help Google to compete with Apple in the wearables market.
