As expected, Google launched several new products today. This includes the Pixel 9 series, the Pixel Watch 3, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Actually, as its name suggests, the company made its new foldable part of the Pixel 9 family. However, Google also stopped selling the original Pixel Fold, in addition to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
The first-gen Pixel Fold arrived in mid-2023, so its discontinuation may come as a surprise. Across many other device lineups, Google is still selling older-gen models at a lower price. So, if you were waiting for the launch of Google’s new foldable to get a big discount on the original Pixel Fold, you might be disappointed. However, there are still third-party retailers with units available, and they might offer some good deals in the coming days to clear out stock.
Google stops selling the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro
It’s not known why Google decided to simply stop selling the original Pixel Fold. Perhaps the company was dissatisfied with its first foldable phone and desired a fresh start. After all, the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold brings important improvements. Less surprising is the discontinuation of the iconic Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. For Pixel smartphones, the company only offers the last two generations on its website, so this was expected.
The exception is the Pixel 7a, as models in Google’s “affordable” lineup take about half an extra year to arrive, so they are available in the Google Store for longer. The same is expected to happen with the Pixel 9a in 2025. However, this year, the main Pixel 9 models arrived a couple of months earlier than usual. So, it’s possible that the 9a will launch in March of next year (Pixel 8a arrived in June 2023).
Currently, the catalog of phones available in the online Google Store includes the Pixel 7a ($499), Pixel 8a ($499), Pixel 8 ($699), Pixel 8 Pro ($999), Pixel 9 ($799), Pixel 9 Pro ($999), Pixel 9 Pro XL ($1,099), and Pixel 9 Pro Fold ($1,799).
