Google Deepmind has introduced a new visual language model for YouTube Shorts, making them more searchable with AI-generated metadata descriptions. The language model, Flamingo, also provides meaningful insights to creators and advertisers.

As a so-called Big Tech company, Google is always at the forefront of embracing new technologies and applying them to its services and products. In April, the tech giant merged Brain and DeepMind teams to form Google Deepmind. The new team now wants to incorporate AI into YouTube Shorts.

The company says in its tweet that the Flamingo visual language model “automatically generates descriptions for hundreds of millions of videos in their metadata, making them more searchable.” The initiative would help creators to put their content in front of more viewers and increase discoverability.

Shorts are currently one of the most popular forms of content on YouTube, with over 50 billion daily views. Thanks to the Flamingo visual language model, each YouTube Shorts would have a description. Additionally, the AI-generated descriptions will be stored as metadata to help YouTube with content recommendations and better understand user intent. All recently uploaded Shorts must have auto-generated descriptions.

According to Todd Sherman, the director of product management for Shorts, the new feature improves the Shorts experience while helping the system understand the content. “We don’t present it to creators, but there’s a lot of effort going into making sure that it’s accurate,” Sherman said. “It’s very unlikely that a descriptive text is generated that somehow frames a video in a bad light. That’s not an outcome that we anticipate at all.”

Applying AI to YouTube Shorts might be the first step for Google Deepmind to makeover the whole user’s experience in the platform. Google AI initiatives will continue to reshape the company’s platforms and services, including the Search.

The company has recently unveiled the “About this image” feature to help users understand the context of an image in searches and spot misinformation. Google Workspace is also benefiting from generative AI tools disguised as Duet AI. More Google services will jump into the AI bandwagon in the coming years.
