Google Chrome is reportedly working on a shortcut to allow users to close active tabs faster. The feature is still in development, and the release date is unknown.
When it comes to web browsers, Google Chrome sits at the top of the list thanks to its incredible performance, security, and extensions. Of course, the biggest downside with the browser has always been its voracious CPU and RAM usage.
Chrome offers a wide range of shortcuts to accelerate web browsing and improve usability. To close an active tab in Google Chrome, you can currently use the ctrl + W shortcut or the “X” icon beside the tab name. While both seem like helpful options, closing an active tab while dozens of tabs are open could be a headache. That’s why Google is developing a new shortcut for closing active tabs.
Google Chrome gets a new shortcut to close active tabs
According to AndroidPolice, one of their users has been able to spot a double-click mouse shortcut for Google Chrome. The feature is spotted in the Chromium Gerrit, allowing users to close an active tab with a double click. If this feature could find its way toward the stable Chrome version, it can greatly impact the browser’s usability.
The idea of a double-click action for closing tabs in a web browser was first ignited by Microsoft Edge users in the Edge Insider support forum. Back in 2020, Edge users requested a double-click mechanism to close active tabs. Of course, some users argued that this feature could ruin their web browsing experience as it increases the risk of closing a tab accidentally.
Neither Google Chrome nor Microsoft Edge has yet to receive such a feature, but Google seems more inclined to bring the feature to its browser. Users who can’t wait to get the feature can install a Chrome extension called ‘Double Click Closes Tab’ and close their tabs with a double-click. Just as the name implies. This extension also provides you with many other options, like reopening an accidentally closed tab with shift-key + double-click.
