Google might soon launch a new feature called Memory for its AI chatbot, Google Bard. When the upgrade is rolled out, Bard can refer back to “memories” you’ve set  — making its responses more personalized and helpful.

Dylan Roussel, an Android developer from France, shared screenshots of this Memory feature (via 9to5Google). It’s still in development. But from the leaked images, it appears to be Google’s answer to ChatGPT’s “custom instructions.” Custom instructions allow you to set preferences or provide context that ChatGPT will remember for every future conversation. It eases the friction of re-explaining your preferences and personal details every single time.

Memory in Google Bard works on the same idea. The screenshots show that the user can turn it on or off from the sidebar. Once enabled, you can use a button to add new memories to Bard. The chatbot will remember those details across all your conversations. And then use them to create more personalized responses.

It’ll save you the hassle of correcting Bard and asking for tailored answers with every new conversation. Since you can add multiple memories in the Memory block, you only need to set your preferences once.

Imagine if Bard could remember your favorite artists or albums and give you more personalized responses in your music recommendation chats. Or, it could recall how many family members you have and suggest meal prep ideas accordingly. Similarly, if you were planning a wedding, you could add memories like the wedding venue, your partner’s preferences, or that you want a small outdoor wedding. Bard will answer all your wedding-related queries within that context, even without a reminder.

You could also use Bard’s Memory to create entire profiles or templates. If you add a medical profile — your history, conditions, medications, allergies — to Bard, it’ll consider those details during all health-related conversations. You could create similar templates for home maintenance, fitness, travel, or work. Imagine feeding a memory of your resume or portfolio to assist with your job search or training. Or include a profile of your workout routines, goals, and diet to get tailored fitness-related responses.

Note that Bard already remembers context within a single conversation. And Bard can use your location for more precise responses. But with Memory, you can set preferences that work across all discussions, new or old.

If, at any point, you want a neutral or impersonal answer, you can switch the Memory feature off.
