The Monsterverse continues in a sequel to the 2021 monster-mash hit, Godzilla vs. Kong. A teaser for the project has now revealed the title to be Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with a release date now scheduled for March 15, 2024. There has been much speculation over what the eventual title for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel would be, with some claiming that it would have the words “Son of Kong” in there somewhere, while some items from the set seemingly revealed the title to be “Godzilla and Kong.” Instead, the project has opted to stick a letter ‘x’ in between the names of the two titans, with the subtitle teasing the emergence of the Hollow Earth upon the world above.
“This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own,” reads the official Godzilla x Xong: The New Empire synopsis. “The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
Godzilla x Xong: The New Empire Will be Led by The Guest Star Dan Stevens
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to once again be helmed by Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard. Released in 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong finds the two beasts clashing after humans move the ape from Skull Island to the Hollow Earth, the home world of the monsters known as “Titans.” The Monsterverse installment was generally well-received by critics, who praised the city-destroying action sequences. The movie also did well financially considering the circumstances at the time, earning $470 million worldwide and becoming the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the fifth installment in Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse, and will see Wingard reunite with The Guest star Dan Stevens, who will take over as the movie’s lead. Stevens will be joined by several familiar faces from the Monsterverse, including Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews, Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, Kaylee Hottle as Jia, with Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House due to join the fray.
Alongside Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the Mosnterverse is also due to take over the small screen thanks to Godzilla and the Titans. Starring father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell, the series will pick up “following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”
So, once again for those in the back, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is now scheduled to be released on March 15, 2024.
