The monochromatic (or black and white) version of Godzilla Minus One has set its sights for an August 1st, 2024 release on Netflix.
In case you missed it, the 37th movie set in the long-running Godzilla franchise dropped on Netflix somewhat surprisingly on June 1st, 2024, the day and date of its digital release on VOD platforms. The movie was made available with many dubbing and subtitle options.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the movie was set in postwar Japan with survivors of the war having to face down a giant devastating monster that threatens to finish them off.
Per the Godzilla blog at the time, the black-and-white version of the movie will arrive on Netflix later in the summer.
This iteration of Godzilla Minus One was released in theaters for a limited period between January and February 2024. However, most audiences would’ve watched the movie in its standard color iteration, which was released in theaters in late 2023.
This movie’s arrival on Netflix comes a couple of days after the announcement that a physical Blu-ray and 4K release will be available in North America in September 2024.
Speaking to IGN about the new version of the movie, Takashi Yamazaki said that the same colorist behind the main release of the film returned to work on this re-release. He laid out the decisions behind creating and releasing this version of the movie, saying that the goal was to make it look like it was “shot on a Leica camera on film,” adding that a scene that particularly stood out to him as having changed was when “Shikishima first comes back to his home, and it’s kind of burnt with all this rubble. The environment is razed. I think that scene had a lot of textures that the color version perhaps didn’t necessarily convey to the audience.”
Netflix has exclusively licensed the movie from Toho International, and our understanding is that Godzilla Minus One will remain on Netflix through June 2029 (a five-year license).
