Google is rolling out a much-anticipated feature to Gmail, a 2-pane view for Android foldables. Well, granted, this has been much anticipated for users of foldable smartphones.
Gmail gets support for 2-pane view on Android foldables
We knew this was coming, as the feature was available for Workspace accounts since last year. I’ve been using it on Gmail for months, for example, and you can do the same now. It’s really useful, needless to say. Do note that Google Meet is getting the same treatment, which is also nice to see.
In any case, now, when you start using the main display on a foldable, Gmail will be split in two. On the left, you’ll be able to see a list of your emails on the left, with a search bar above it. The menu can also be accessed from this side, and the same goes for the Compose button.
On the right side, you’ll see an actual email tree, with all the options for it. So, you’ll get the delete, mark read/unread, more options… and other buttons. All in all, this is very similar to what we’ve been seeing on tablets.
Let’s hope we’ll see many more apps with similar support this year
We’re looking forward to seeing more implementations like this. Google already did it for several apps, and some third-party developers did the same. It’s still nowhere near where it should be.
Experience with a ton of the most popular apps on foldables is really bad. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are prime examples. Those are, at least, the apps that came to mind first, though I’ve seen a ton of examples thus far.
Let’s hope that things will change moving forward, as Google is pushing in that direction, and more and more OEMs are releasing foldable devices. More and more foldable devices are coming to global markets, so that will, hopefully, push developers in the right direction.
