Sure, you can type text prompts or speak to Gemini, but there are other ways to interact with the AI platform. You’re able to actually upload documents to Gemini and ask it questions based on their contents. Users can upload several types of documents to Gemini already, but the company just expanded the number of documents it accepts. There’s just a bit of a catch.

If you want to upload documents to Gemini, it’s a simple process. The process is pretty much the same for both the website and the app. Go to the text field and tap/click the “+” button. This will take you to your file picker. After that, just go to the file that you want and upload it. You’ll then be able to ask questions about it. Some of the most popular files that people upload are images.

Gemini can accept more file formats

Today, Google just announced that you can now upload more types of files to Gemini. This is an incredibly useful function. Sometimes, what you want to analyze can’t be summed up in a simple text prompt. You may need to analyze a report or an essay.

In a Google Blog post, the company announced that Gemini can now accept several file formats such as TXT, DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX, and Google Docs. Along with those, Gemini can now accept data files such as XLS, XLSX, CSV, TSV, and Google Sheets. This heightens the utility of Gemini greatly.

You don’t even need to have the documents on your computer. You’re able to import files right from Google Drive.

Now, what’s the catch? Well, if you want to use this functionality, you’ll need to pay. You’ll only be able to upload these documents if you’re a Google Workpace user with Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium.

One thing to mention is that this is only for the Gemini website. Google provides information on how to upload documents through the Gemini mobile app.
