One of the issues with early AI chatbots was that every time you wanted to talk to them, you’d have to basically introduce yourself all over again. This is something that ChatGPT solved with its memory feature. Well, Gemini has a memory feature, and Google made it available to free users.

This should come as no surprise, as Google offers a ton of pretty powerful features to its free users. The $20/month Gemini Advanced plan comes with certain perks like more powerful models, but not everyone can fork over that kind of dough.

Google gives Gemini a memory, and free users can use it

If you’ve gotten into the habit of using Gemini in your life, then you will love this feature. Over the course of using an AI chatbot, you’re likely to reveal some information about yourself. It’s important for certain kinds of conversations. However, if you enter a different conversation, then you’ll have to repeat that information. For instance, if you typically use if for dietary advice, and you have an allergy, you’d have to type that in for every conversation.

However, Google released a feature that eliminates this. Called Saved Info, this feature allows Gemini to remember information about you that you would have to otherwise enter over and over again. It came out in November last year and it was restricted to only Gemini Advanced users.

If you have a specific like or dislike, Gemini will remember it for future conversations. For example, if you tell it that you’re allergic to nuts, then it will recommend food products without nuts in them when you ask for recipes or food suggestions. If you tell it that you like 70s rock, it will take that into account when recommending music.

How to add information

Accessing this feature is as easy as going to the settings on the Gemini website. You’ll see the Saved Info section.

In the section, you’ll see the button to add information. Click on the add button, and you’ll see a popup appear. Type the fact about you that you want Google to remember. Then, when you use it next time, Gemini will pull from the information you gave. There are the options to edit and delete your information.

In your conversation, if Gemini does reference the information you gave, it will mark it as a source. At this point, this feature is only available for the web version of Gemini. App support should come in the near future.
