After the not-so-good debut of the Borderlands movie, Borderlands fans need a win, and the teaser for Borderlands 4 that popped up during Gamescom this week might just be the hope that tides them all over. For better or worse, the Borderlands franchise has grown so big that it was able to transition to the silver screen. Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t reviewed well and that’s a shame for fans of the franchise.
When it comes to the games, most of if not all of the AAA titles have enjoyed success. Though it’s the first and second games that are probably thought of the most fondly by the majority of people who still come back for every series release. The most recent game in the mainline series was Borderlands 3 which launched back in 2019. With that in mind, it’s been about 5 years since a new Borderlands game if you don’t count the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands spin-off. That game is good, but it’s not really a mainline entry.
Luckily, fans may not have to wait too long for the next mainline Borderlands game to launch. Maybe.
The Borderlands 4 teaser confirms a launch date of 2025
The teaser doesn’t have a whole lot to show off, certainly not in the way of gameplay or even a proper cinematic cutscene. It does however do two things. It’s confirmed by the end of the teaser that the game was Borderlands 4. It wasn’t explicitly stated until about one minute and 10 seconds in. Not that it was hard to decipher with the first few seconds confirming the teaser was for a game by 2K and Gearbox, in addition to the big Phoenix right afterward.
In addition to the game confirmation, the end of the teaser confirms a release date of 2025. So there you have it. Borderlands 4 is releasing next year.
It’s coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S
Borderlands 4 will be a multi-platform game that is likely to drop for every platform on launch day. So it doesn’t seem like there are any timed-exclusive launches here. Specifically, Borderlands 4 is launching for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. When exactly that is, isn’t quite clear. The teaser only mentions that the game is coming in 2025, but it doesn’t say when in 2025.
So there’s a possibility it wouldn’t be some time until the end of the year. Take-Two Interactive announced its acquisition of Gearbox in March of this year and confirmed Borderlands 4 was in the works. So the game wasn’t a total surprise. This announcement was on also March 28, so that could mean the development isn’t very far in. If you missed the teaser trailer reveal, you can view it below.
