It is almost 20 years since Bill Murray first voiced Garfield on the big screen in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie. Now the iconic lasagne-loving feline is about to make a comeback in theaters with Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt taking over as the voice of the titular character. Ahead of its release in May 2024, fans have been given the first look at the new CG-animated movie in a first trailer.
The synopsis for Garfield’s latest foray onto the big screen reads:
“Garfield, the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure! After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father – scruffy street cat Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) – Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfect pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist.”
After being originally announced back in 2016, the newest iteration of Jim Davis’ famous cat finally made a big leap forward in November 2021, when it was announced that Chris Pratt would be taking the lead in the movie. Following in the footsteps of Murray, and the legendary Lorenzo Music, Pratt’s casting was announced almost simultaneously with his revealed role as Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While the internet was not happy about that casting, his role as Garfield came under similar scrutiny.
However, now that the first look at Pratt in action has been revealed, fans of both the actor and the character are forming their new opinions and will be no doubt unleashing them on social media very soon.
Prior to the release of the trailer, fans were given a sneak peek at this new take on Garfield when a first look image was released at the end of October to celebrate National Cat Day. Garfield is such an iconic character that it would be brave person who messed with his appearance, and in the main, the new version is pretty much in line with all other versions that have graced comic books, TV shows, movies and games over the last 47 years.
Who Appears in Garfield’s Cast?
Just like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Garfield has not held back when it comes to the ensemble cast lending their voices to characters in the movie. As well as Pratt taking on the role of Garfield, other stars include Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, Cecily Strong and Samuel L. Jackson.
Of course, with the box office currently being a place where even the most popular characters can still fail to make a splash, there is no guarantee that Garfield will be able to capture the attention in the same way as the juggernaut that was The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Illumination’s behemoth arrived in early April to capitalize on the Easter holiday weekend market, Garfield’s release in late May will be looking to do the same around the Memorial Day holiday weekend next year.
There is no doubt that Garfield has the same family appeal as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, especially if it can provide a similar pull to older fans of the character as well as new fans getting their first taste of Garfield’s droll wit. Expect a more detailed look at this version of everyone’s favorite lazy, orange cat in future trailers before the film hits theaters on May 24, 2024.
