Less than a week into the market, Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldables are already receiving their first software update. The company is pushing the latest, August 2023 security patch to the duo. The update is available widely in several parts of the world, including the US.

The August update for the US version of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes with the firmware build number F946USQS1AWH3 (carrier-locked unit). That for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is F731USQS1AWH3 (via). As indicated by these build numbers and confirmed by the official changelog, the update doesn’t bring any new features or improvements to the two foldables. Samsung is only pushing the latest security fixes to the devices.

The Korean firm has already revealed that the August SMR (Security Maintenance Release) contains fixes for as many as 86 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family. These include Android OS flaws and Galaxy-specific security issues. At least three of those are classified as critical vulnerabilities by Samsung and Google. The vast majority of the rest are high-severity vulnerabilities, the companies confirmed.

All of these security fixes will soon reach every Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 unit around the world. The factory-unlocked variants of the foldables are still awaiting the update, but Samsung should not keep them waiting for much longer. If you have ordered one of the new Samsung foldables and are expecting delivery within the next few days, this update might be available for you out of the box.

As usual, your foldable should be able to automatically search for updates once it connects to the internet. If it finds one, you will be prompted to download and install it. You can also manually search for new OTA (over the air) updates on your phone, though. To do that, go to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install. If there’s no update available for you, wait a few days and check again.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 will get the Android 14 update later this year

Samsung shipped the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 with Android 13-based One UI 5.1.1. The new One UI version recently started rolling out to older Galaxy foldables and tablets. Meanwhile, the company is already beta-testing Android 14-based One UI 6.0 for the Galaxy S23 series. It’s expected to push the stable build to the phones in October. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 should get Android 14 shortly after the Galaxy S23. We will let you know when the big Android update arrives for your shiny new foldable.
