Samsung is rolling out a new software update to the Galaxy Watch 4 series. The update comes with firmware version R8*0XXU1FVD4 and brings the May 2022 Android security patch. Both the vanilla Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Classic are receiving the new OTA (over the air) package.
The latest update for Samsung’s newest smartwatches is currently available to users in the US as well as the company’s homeland South Korea. The rollout should reach other regions within a few days.
The official changelog for the update doesn’t mention any new features or enhancements. It simply says improved system stability and reliability along with the latest security patch. But according to a screenshot shared by SamMobile, the OTA package weighs almost 100MB for the vanilla Galaxy Watch 4. So there could be more underlying changes in tow.
Nonetheless, if you’re using any of Samsung’s latest smartwatches, you should be receiving the new update soon. The Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone will notify you of the OTA rollout once available. You can also head over to the Watch Settings in the app and tap on the Watch software update option to manually check for updates.
Speaking of the Galaxy Wearable app, it recently got an update too. The new version adds the ability to automatically update itself. If turned on, the app will update to the latest version when available depending on your network settings. You can set the app to automatically update over Wi-Fi or cellular connection or both.
Galaxy Watch 4 gets a new software update
Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 4 series in mid-2021. The devices come in two models, with each coming in two size variants and two connectivity variants. The devices market the company’s return to Google’s Wear OS watch platform. The preceding models ran on the Korean brand’s in-house Tizen OS, which it still uses on its Smart TVs and IoT (internet of things) devices.
Debuted with Wear OS 3.0, the Galaxy Watch 4 series is still the only smartwatch to run the latest version of Google’s watch platform. These are arguably the best smartwatches for Android users. And they have gotten better over time, with Samsung regularly seeding new features and improvements to them.
An update last month improved Samsung Health of the Galaxy Watch 4. The company is now following up with another update that brings the latest security patch and some optimizations for improved stability of the device. We will certainly let you know when it receives another update in the future.
