Samsung‘s Galaxy S22 launch event is still more than a month away but we already know a great deal about the upcoming phones. The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra will bring plenty of upgrades over their respective predecessors. But it appears the devices are not all about upgrades. There may be some disappointing downgrades as well, at least there is one. The Galaxy S22 Ultra could have just 8GB of RAM on the base variant. That’s down from 12GB of RAM the base Galaxy S21 Ultra model offered last year.

The evidence comes from a recent benchmark entry. Both Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 variants of the Galaxy S22 Ultra recently appeared on benchmarking platform Geekbench bearing model numbers SM-S908B and SM-S908U respectively. Among other things, we can see that the devices only boast 8GB of RAM. Reliable Samsung insider Ice Universe has also confirmed this.

Of course, Samsung will also offer the Galaxy S22 Ultra with a higher RAM amount. We are expecting the device to come in 12GB and 16GB RAM variants as well. But the company may irk many fans by offering just 8GB of RAM on the base variant, though that may not significantly affect the day-to-day performance. The Korean giant may be looking to give more choices to buyers but not everyone sees this decision the same way. Hopefully, this downgrade will be compensated by some monetary benefit.

As far as storage capacity is concerned, reports suggest the Galaxy S22 Ultra may boast up to 1TB of onboard storage. Other options include 256GB and 512GB. There’s no expandable storage on this phone though.

Galaxy S22 series is nearing its official launch

Now that the Galaxy S21 FE is finally out of the way, all eyes are on the Galaxy S22 series. Reports suggest the trio will go official in the first half of February. But, as said earlier, we already know a lot about the upcoming phones thanks to a mountain of leaks over the past few months. If those leaks are anything to go by, then Samsung is all set to raise the bar for Android smartphone makers very soon. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, in particular, could be the phone to beat in 2022. You can find out everything we know about the phone so far in our Preview here. We expect to hear more about the new Samsung flagships in the coming weeks.
