On Wednesday, we got the pretty interesting news that Nvidia showcased some generative AI tools that could be implemented into video games. These tools could help developers create AI-generated storylines and character dialogue. Well, Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, said that fully AI-generated games are no more than 10 years away.
Right now, we are still at the point where we’re wondering just how far generative AI will go. It’s already proven to be extremely capable and scary at the same time. The technology has already disrupted several Industries including journalism, art, music, Etc. Now, we’re all wondering what impact it will have on gaming.
We predict that more people will use AI for gaming in the future. However, we’re not certain that many people will use AI for actually coding the games. According to a recent study, most companies don’t like to use AI for coding.
Nvidia CEO believes that fully AI-generated games are less than 10 years away
Jensen Huang spoke at GTC, the GPU Technology Conference. Shortly after unveiling the new Blackwell GPUs for AI development, Huang answered a question in a Q&A session. During the session, after being asked if he sees a future where every pixel in the video game is generated, he said, “I think with almost, almost anything in technology, the S curve is not longer than a decade once it becomes true,”.
Basically, he’s saying that once the technology starts to take form, it’ll take less than a decade for it to fully become realized. So, according to his views, by the time 2034 rolls around, we could very well see games created from scratch via AI.
He did say that he didn’t really believe that we’d create games simply by adding a text prompt into a generator. However, he said ” I do think that, let’s say, DLSS 10 in the far future is going to be a completely neural rendering system that interfaces with a game engine in different ways.”
At this point, it’s really hard to tell where AI technology will be in 10 years. It seems that every month or so, companies are coming out with some huge innovation that pushes AI even further. Once we have the groundwork set for a certain technology, production only accelerates from there on. More people and companies are hopping on the AI train, so who knows if 10 years turns into 5 years? For all we know, AI could substantially influence video games just one year down the road.
