The first trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope will debut on Sunday. While it isn’t confirmed precisely when it will drop, it will most likely coincide with the Super Bowl, where many other movie trailers will also be released.
Nope is the third film to be written and directed by Peele. His first two films, Get Out and Us, are both box office and critical successes. To celebrate Nope, Universal released a quick 30-second hype video featuring footage from both Get Out and Us, highlighting his high-quality horror work so far. The video ends with a brief glimpse at Nope, featuring a look at the film’s main three stars: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun.
While plot details remain hidden, Nope is expected to be released in theaters on July 22, 2022. Additional cast for the film includes Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott. Jesse Plemons was offered a role in the film but turned it down to accept a role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Peele began his career mainly in comedy as a cast member on Mad TV. Later, he and co-star Keegan-Michael Key would create the sketch comedy series Key & Peele. The series aired on Comedy Central from 2010 to 2016 and became an instant success, with many sketches going viral. The two actors would continue to work together on other projects, including Keanu and Toy Story 4.
Despite Starting in Comedy, Peele Has Become a Horror Icon
Peele made his directorial debut in 2017 with Get Out, a horror-comedy that was a critical success and box office smash, grossing $255.4 million. The film also did well at the Academy Awards as it was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay, for which Peele ended up winning. Us didn’t receive the same love at the awards, but it was still a hit with critics and audiences and earned over $255 million at the box office.
In addition to directing, Peele has also had success as a producer under his Monkeypaw Productions banner. Projects that Peele has produced, in addition to his own films, include BlacKkKlansman, Lovecraft Country, Hunters, Keanu, and the 2021 Candyman sequel.
Many have praised Peele for how he blends horror with social commentary. They’re unique to the genre in that they tell a meaningful and relevant story while not relying on cheap jump scares. It’s unclear what Nope is about, but it will be a movie that many people will say yes to seeing.
