According to a new rumor that surfaced, the very first mobile SoC from OPPO will land in 2024. OPPO is one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, and this is not the first time we’ve heard about this.
OPPO may release its first mobile SoC in 2024, while its AP is coming next year
Quite some time ago, some rumors surfaced mentioning that OPPO is working on its very own SoC. Now we have an approximate launch timeframe for that processor. As a reminder, OPPO does have its own NPU (Neural Processing Unit), the MariSilicon X. That NPU was used in the OPPO Find X5 Pro, the company’s latest flagship smartphone.
The report also states that this chip will be manufactured using a 4nm process by TSMC. That’s not all, though. As OPPO’s AP (Application Processor) seems to be coming even sooner. That chip is tipped to launch in 2023, and use TSMC’s 6nm process.
As most of you know by now, both Apple and Google are utilizing chips of their own design. That gives them a lot of control, and are able to adapt those chips to their own smartphones. That comes with a lot of benefits, of course.
OPPO is looking to emulate Apple and Google
OPPO is looking to do something similar, it seems. This is also not the only company that seems to be doing so. Xiaomi used to tinker with its own SoC back in the day, but that was never a flagship SoC, nor something Xiaomi used in mid-range or high-end devices.
A while back, there were some rumors that Xiaomi is also looking into making its own, powerful processor. We’re not sure if that will pan out, but it is worth mentioning.
Apple has been doing it for quite some time now, while Google released its first mobile SoC last year. The company’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro flagships are fueled by it. The second-gen Google Tensor chip is expected this year, alongside the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro handsets.
