Google will launch its first foldable smartphone in Q4 2022, it seems. This information comes from a very reliable source, from Ross Young. He, for those of you who don’t know, is a display analyst, and a tipster at the same time.
First foldable smartphone from Google allegedly coming in Q4 2022
He tweeted out that displays for Google’s first foldable will enter mass production in Q3 2022, and that the phone will launch in Q4 2022. So, you can expect it to arrive in October, November, or December.
That timing puts it in line with the Pixel 7 launch timeframe. So, all of those phones may arrive at the same time. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched in October last year. On the flip side, Google may want to host a separate event for its first foldable.
It may carry the ‘Pixel Notepad’ name
That foldable phone may be called the Google Pixel Notepad. That name was tipped last month. The report came from 9to5Google, and it said that it has been provided by “a source that has proven knowledgeable about Google’s Pixel plans in the past”.
That would sure be a surprise, but somewhat unique new name in the world of Folds and Flips. Google allegedly also considered the ‘Logbook’ name, but gave up on it at some point.
Do note that Google may yet change its mind when it comes to the naming of this phone. The launch is still quite far away, which gives Google plenty of time to change things around, if it lands on a more attractive name.
Now, we don’t know much about this smartphone, but it is expected to open like a book. It is expected to be a competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, not the Z Flip 3, basically.
The device is tipped to be more affordable than the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Z Fold 3 launched with a price tag of $1,799, so the Pixel Notepad should sit somewhere below that price tag. The rumored price tag is $1,400.
