Strategy fans can look forward to a new game in the Civilization series as Firaxis parent company Take Two confirms that development is underway. Take Two confirmed the announcement in a blog post on February 17 (spotted by Eurogamer), alongside news that Firaxis would be shaking things up at the studio. Specifically that some of the studio’s long-time employees would be leaving.
Steve Martin, who has served as the President of Firaxis for the past 17 years, will be leaving. Taking over the role will be Heather Hazen, who was previously the studio’s Chief Operating Officer and has been at Firaxis since 2020. In addition to Martin, 23-year Firaxis veteran designer Jake Solomon has announced that he will be moving on from the studio.
Solomon was a designer on XCOM, XCOM 2, and most recently Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Solomon will be leaving Firaxis to pursue a new dream. “I love designing tactical turn-based games, but it’s time for other, smarter people to push that space forward. My brain is on fire with a new dream. Time to go chase it,” Solomon says in his official goodbye post.
Ed Beach will be the creative director on the new Civilization game
Confirmation of a new Civ game is exciting for anyone who enjoys the franchise. Unfortunately, that’s about all fans are going to get for now. Firaxis isn’t really saying much about the upcoming title. Other than the fact that Ed Beach will be the creative director for the game. Beach was the lead designer on Civilization VI, though, which was the best-selling Civ game to date. Which bodes well for whatever this new Civ game is going to be.
Speaking of sales, Steam is currently holding a 2K publisher sale. And wouldn’t you know it, Civilization VI is included in that sale. You can currently pick it up for $5.99, a whopping 90% off its original price of $59.99. If you haven’t yet played Civ VI and you do like strategy games, now would be a good time to check this one out. The sale also includes other 2K-published titles like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Marvel’s Midnight Suns and more.
