Samsung is getting closer to launching its second-gen smart object tracker. It has just obtained the FCC certification for the Galaxy SmartTag 2, which has been in rumors for the past few months. Among other things, the FCC documents contain a live photo of the product, revealing a complete redesign.

The American regulatory body certified the Galaxy SmartTag 2 with the model number EIT5600, which previously appeared in a Bluetooth SIG certification as well. The accompanying documents reveal that the device will boast Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) connectivity options. The FCC even photographed the two antennas.

Speaking of photos, we have a live photo of the tracker itself. While the first-gen Galaxy SmartTag was a square-shaped device with rounded corners and a small punch hole for attaching your keys, the upcoming tracker has an oblong shape and a much bigger hole. The product itself looks quite big, with the hole seemingly taking about one-third of its area.

Unfortunately, the photo has no point of reference, so we can’t confirm the dimensions of the Galaxy SmartTag 2 or the size of the hole. However, it appears big enough to let you comfortably put a finger through it. The tracker has “Galaxy SmartTag” printed on its surface and is seen in white in FCC documents. Samsung may offer it in other colors as well.

There may not be a Galaxy SmartTag 2 “Plus”

Samsung’s first-gen smart object tracker came in January 2021, with the company launching the device in two versions. The standard version features BLE only, while the Plus version added UWB connectivity. By the looks of it, the Korean firm plans to launch only one Galaxy SmartTag 2 as the standard version itself has UWB support. There may not be a Plus version.

As said earlier, the Galaxy SmartTag 2 previously appeared in a Bluetooth certification listing. It confirmed Bluetooth version 5.3 support, an upgrade over Bluetooth 5.1 found on the first-gen model. The newer version of the wireless connectivity technology was launched in July 2021 with a host of improvements over Bluetooth 5.1, which debuted in early 2019.

Most notably, Bluetooth 5.3 boasts improved security and power efficiency. It offers a more reliable and stable wireless connection with a wider range, while simultaneously consuming less power than the older version. These improvements should help improve the battery life of the Galaxy SmartTag 2. We may hear more about the new tracker in the coming months as Samsung prepares for its launch.
