Action star Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in the first trailer for Extraction 2. Released courtesy of Netflix, the first footage from the action movie sequel teases a bigger, badder, more brutal sequel as the hulking Hemsworth returns from the (near) dead to tear his way through bad guys all over again. Check out the first trailer for the highly anticipated Extraction 2 below.
Directed by Sam Hargrave, written by Joe Russo, and led by Chris Hemsworth, the first Extraction landed on the streaming platform back in 2020 and introduces the Thor star as former SASR operator turned black ops mercenary, Tyler Rake, who has been left with nothing to lose thanks to his long, violent career. While at his lowest ebb, Rake is given a chance at redemption when he is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.
The sequel picks up with Rake after barely surviving the events of the first movie. Rake is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.
The first trailer for Extraction 2 centers almost solely on Rake’s battle to save said family from said prison, a sequence that looks like it will dwarf the already hugely impressive action set pieces from the first outing.
Extraction 2 Will Land on Netflix in June
Extraction 2 finds Hemsworth reuniting with director Sam Hargrave. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO will produce the project, with Joe Russo having penned the script. Golshifteh Farahani reprises her role from the first Extraction, with Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili co-starring.
Extraction 2 was based on the graphic novel ‘Ciudad‘ by Ande Parks, from a story by Ande Parks, Joe Russo & Anthony Russo, with illustrations by Fernando León González. Extraction 2 is produced by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Chris Hemsworth, Patrick Newall and Sam Hargrave, with Angela Russo-Otstot, Jake Aust, Benjamin Grayson, Steven Scavelli, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely as executive producers.
The plan is for Extraction to spawn a shared universe franchise, with spinoffs and further sequels currently in development. Director Sam Hargrave has since teased the franchise potential should the sequel do as well as its predecessor. “So, [as far as] my personal involvement, I would like to be as involved as possible but I also don’t want to be greedy,” he said back in 2021. “There’s a lot of other super talented filmmakers out there who would have very unique visions and would bring something new and fresh to the franchise that I would be excited to see as a fan. Hopefully we get to do the second one with all the same team and really establish the franchise, if you will. But from there I would love to see, as a fan of cinema, other young directors who, again, can push the level of action.”
Extraction 2 is scheduled to be released by Netflix on June 16, 2023.
